Cold winter and lots of music…

Going into the winter, I had a lot of ideas in my head about how I’d be spending more time in the studio and recording a bunch of songs that have been sitting on the back-burner for a long time.  Made some progress there, but not nearly as much studio time as I had anticipated.

There are always trade-offs, though.  Live shows keep my fingers warm and my brain ticking.  Adding a few fresh tracks to the show each week has kept me on my toes.  It’s been a lot of fun removing some old standards that I’ve really grown weary of, and adding new music from bands like The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, Zack Brown Band, Ray LaMontagne, and Radiohead.  Committed to adding a little new stuff each week, with the hope of a completely fresh set list by the end of the season.

Now that the holidays have passed along, time to commit some more time to the studio as well.  3 tracks for the next album are cut and the rest are largely on the tip of my tongue, so I should be able to flow into it pretty smoothly.  Our time is so limited.  Not in a bad way, just so much good stuff going on everywhere.  I’ll soon be scheduling things in the middle of the night.  But that might be best, anyway.  I feel like I’ve got to be pushed up against a wall and then it starts to happen.  Notes flow.  Words create themselves.  It is never easy, until it’s hard…then it comes easy.  I don’t pretend to understand it – just let it happen.

For now, I’m happy doing what I’m doing.  My fingertips are calloused, my voice is raspy, and music is all over the place every day.  Everything else is easy…
